A few days ago I read that Bentley's Bookshop in Greenville is closing. Although Bentley's had moved downtown a few years ago, I only visited it there a few times. My best memories of this bookstore are when it was quietly located on Pelham Road (when Pelham Road still had a chance to be quiet). I remember buying a large book of Gwendolyn Brooks poems for a birthday present for one of my friends. But mainly I bought books for myself. Pictured are three of the many books that I purchased there. The C.S. Lewis paperbacks were $2 and $2.50. Miracles once belonged to Donald A. Waterfield in Troy, NY. The green one is Sarah Orne Jewett's The Country of the Painted Firs. It was $10, and I am its 3rd owner. Frances L. Goodrich of Asheville, NC wrote Sept. 15 '30 inside the front cover. Mrs. R. W. Hawkins (also of Asheville) placed her address label on the first page.
